Energy & Mass Balance Studies

The studies involve carrying out energy & mass balance studies for the individual equipment, system or for the entire premises / plant to assess operating efficiency and identify opportunities for improvements and optimization.
The studies are tailored to meet the specific plant requirements and are difficult to generalize.

The typical scope of the work for Equipment Studies could cover
  • Computing / Measuring the flow rates of various input streams
  • Gauging the heat contents of the individual streams
  • Assessing the energy conversion / generation / dissipation in the system, if applicable
  • Computing / Estimating the total system energy
  • Computing / Measuring the flow rate of the various output streams

Chilled Water Load Measurement & Balancing

The studies involve measuring the flow (chilled water & process fluid if possible), differential temperature as well as differential pressure across all the major chilled water heat exchangers to assess operating load on the individual equipment. The overall operating load & refrigeration effect generated by various chillers is also computed based on the physical measurements. The values are matched with the overall data to assess gaps, distribution losses and identify potential savings / improvement areas.

The typical scope of the work covers
  • Measuring the flow of chilled water at the chiller inlet with non-contact ultrasonic transit time flow meter
  • Gauging temperature drop across the chiller with digital temperature indicator
  • Computing Overall Chilling Effect
  • Noting down / assessing average Chilling effect delivered by the system

Cooling Water Load Measurement & Balancing

The studies involve measuring the flow cooling water, differential temperature across all the major cooling water heat exchangers to assess operating load on the individual equipment. The overall operating load & cooling effect generated by various cooling towers is also computed based on the physical measurements. The studies involve identifying and tagging the leakages in the compressed air pipelines with the help of an ultrasonic leak detector and identify potential savings/improvement areas.

  • Qualitatively assessing & categorizing the leakages in major, moderate or minor

The studies involve measuring surface temperature of insulated surfaces to assess the heat loss and opportunities to optimize the overall losses in the system.

The typical scope of the work covers:
  • Checking surface temperature of steam distribution system at predetermined intervals with thermal imager
  • Checking surface temperature of major steam consuming equipment’s
  • Capturing & Providing visual and thermal images for the hot spots
  • Qualitatively assessing & categorizing the hot spots in major, moderate or minor
  • Qualitatively assessing the overall heat loss through the system distribution system

Illumination & Lighting

The studies involve measuring the illumination level at various locations as well as analyzing type and location of various light fittings to assess the system efficacy and opportunities to optimize the overall system performance.

The typical scope of the work covers:
  • Noting down the illumination (Lux) level at various locations.
  • Gathering data of types of fittings, switchgear.
  • Assessing with the operational practices and switching controls
  • Analysing the data with norm / general practices

Power & Harmonic Assessment

The studies involve recording thermal as well as actual image of electrical system including panels, switch yard, capacitors to identify hot spots and opportunities for improvements.

  • Installing Clamp-on Type Power & Harmonic Analyzer for the specified load for the predetermined period.
  • Gathering the key electrical parameters including total and individual harmonic up to 25 th level.
